Steve's association with Ascot United started in 1992 when he joined the re-formed Senior Saturday side, started by old playing partner Ray Saunders, having semi-retired from playing competitive football when he moved to the Bracknell area in 1984.
He started playing senior football in 1967 for Kew Association and later for Old Latymerians in the Southern Amateur League on Saturdays, and West Middlesex League Sunday team Royal Villa.
He became player/manager of the reserve team when it was formed in 1996, and around the same time became Hon. Secretary for both Senior Saturday teams playing in the Hayes & Giles East Berkshire League.
In 1998 he decided to just concentrate on the secretarial role. However he still managed to turn out for the reserve team for brief appearances every season from 1998 to 2003.
After the club AGM in 2002 he also took on the role of club Communications Officer which had been introduced to coincide with the development of the club’s website.
At the end of season 2005/2006 Steve stopped his secretarial role, and took on the role of Director of Communications. However at the start of the 2008/2009 season he took over the role of Match Secretary for the Hellenic League 1st & Reserve team from Mark Lambert. He has handed that role over to Mark Gittoes for the 2010/11 season.
He also still finds time to be an active playing member of the Vets team on Sundays, which over the last few years has grown from strength to strength. Also plays regular 7-a-side games on astroturf in a British Airways IM league. Not bad going for a 59 year old !
